By Luz Elena Gone Estrada
Raised as a Mexican-American daughter
Y’all think I’m filled with laughter
Judging me from my outside
Not from my inside
Y’all taught me a lesson.
Got tired of all the voices in my head
Of all the things they said.

They’re not worth your tears.”
Y’all taught me a lesson.
Had to fight
To see the precious light
I had to sacrifice
A very important thing in my life
Y’all taught me a lesson.
I used to fear
Of what I may hear
I was such a mess
I thought I was less
Y’all taught me a lesson.
