Myself

Myself

By Gabi Marcelo Barragan

Viva Mexico

Viva la Raza

When I see myself I wonder

how much my ancestors suffered

and how much pain they had.

When I see myself I wonder how we

can live in this world with so much

segregation, stereotypes, and pain.

People see me as an alien, immigrant,

or a cartla or what eve you think I am.

But I know I’m a human with rights

and beauty.

Those words have a disempowering meaning but

I know my “Raza”

“Me Mexicanos” will bring me up.

You might think my songs are weird,

but I will always sing them

“Soy inmigrante que no deja de queri”

Ya I am here but for the American dream:

to work hard

a better education

“Yo soy humano tambien como tu”

Why do you call us aliens?

I need an explanation!
