Night Roads

Those long drives in the darkness of night
When no one has anything to say
We sit in companionable silence, our hearts light
The faint sounds of classic rock play

And I rest my cheek on the glass
Comforted by quiet presences
Watching the cars pass
And the steady rows of flashing fences

Street lights shine, passing rays
Cast disfigured shadows
Silhouettes dance in every which way
The engine hums gently outside the windows

And I know
They love me so
