The Ember

The world has become silent
And the void that threatens to consume all has grown out of control
The embers of a soul, trampled and feebly flickering
Seem all that remain now
In the darkness
That they have left

The shadows creep along the walls, black and crumbling
From years of being pounded on by shadows and now the void
Shadows mingle in the heart, now only feebly pumping
For it has lost its will
Plotting to smother the few embers
That remain
Flickering in the darkness
That they have left

But maybe the embers, the light
The little that remains
Will be enough to stop it
The thought of the darkness and emptiness that has so long reigned
Finally vanquished and gone
Leaves the embers hoping,
Hoping in the darkness
They have left

Because yes, the embers
That they thought were gone, trampled
Are now tearing through the void
And clawing up through the darkness
The gleam of something other than sorrow is shining
For the first time in ages
Shining in the darkness
That they have left

And the burbling of laughter is finding its way out again
And the corners of a mouth so long set in sadness
Have found their way up
Through the darkness, and the void
The embers that were not long ago only thoughts are now
Celebrating in the light
That has won
