Tradition

Tradition
by Connor Yellow Earrings
Standing Rock Reservation, SD

Traditions dancing in my head,
Like the men at united tribes powwow.
Wearing feathers on their backs,
Their feet stomping on the ground,
Their arms rising up towards the staffs.
honor moves through me.
Lakota dances
Lakota words,
Philamayaye
Native songs making us dance
Connecting us to our ancestors
As they danced and sang
The same stories
When I dance and sing I feel like
Being a good dancer and feel good when I sing too.
What feels good when I dance and sing is that
I feel like drumming and dancing with drum.
What beets in me is my heart.
