When the Moon Rises

When the Moon Rises

by Jyren Thompson

(Navajo Nation Reservation, Crownpoint, NM)

The sun sees everything around us

The sun sees us walking, running, jogging or even us talking

The sun knows where or when we are there

The sun can see us go to school, when we play, or see us do things

like travel, going to the store, or walking the park

When the moon rises

all animals that roam the night

look for prey to eat for dinner

When the moon rises

the moon sees us sleeping

until a new Dawn

The moon sees the creatures

that roam the night, searching

for a victim to eat

The moon sees the quiet neighborhood

with gangsters shooting

When the moon rises

the moon sees a Howler  walk the mesas

of a full moon night.

When the moon sets

all the animals crawl back into their holes

waiting until a new night

to hunt for a victim

to feast.
