Just Like the Melody of the Sad Blues

Just Like the Melody of the Sad Blues
by Zarian Brown

Her voice so graceful
just like the melody of the sad blues.

“Now you listen here,
don’t you give up,”
my grandma said to me,
“it’s just a matter of time
before the world opens up doors for you.”

She always used to wear
her blue rigid dress
with her bunny bedroom shoes
so fluffed.

No matter what her fragrance smelled like,
(hot mocha coffee
with caramel and sweet cream),
she used to always start off with,
“Back in my day.”

Every time she would give me a lesson
or tip to survive the world,
I used to think to myself
Why is she always happy?
but then I realized, it’s not that.
